Academy of Fine Arts and Sciences in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood have learned that they can grow the ingredients in the ethnic dishes they love. Guided by Seven Generations Ahead’s Fresh From the Farm program, the community took an exciting journey through the lives of plants and into a brand new school garden designed by the students themselves. After exploring their own food culture, Orozco students chose to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, squash, jalapenos, strawberries and herbs. Many students are now tending the garden in a new after school program. The Fresh From the Farm program also held parent programming for a group of very energetic and involved Spanish-speaking parents. We taught them nutrition, healthy eating, shopping and meal preparations and two gardening education lessons. Along with their school garden, these families have cultivated a sense of ownership, respect and pride, as well as new habits for healthy living.

Three Schools, Two Bites, and Healthy Eating for Life

In the fight against childhood obesity, sometimes the humble tomato can be our best weapon. But how do you get children to eat one when chips beckon? Our answer: the “Two Bite Club.” When Seven Generations Ahead brought our Fresh From the Farm program to three Chicago-area schools, even the pickiest students joined the club. Students at Chase Elementary School in Logan Square, Dunne Technology Academy in Roseland, and Marquardt Middle School in Glendale Heights tried a combined total of 4,030 bites of 23 new foods. Kids tried blueberries, carrots, honey, bell peppers, and pomegranates, but their favorite was jicama. Fresh From the Farm also brought in a bee keeper, a farmer and a master composter to teach children about how food is grown. Now, the children are teaching parents. As one proud mother explained, “Ever since my son started the program, he talks to me about the benefits of fruits and vegetables.” And hopefully, this new mindset will help these children and their families live healthy lives.

Growing Health in Rural Coles County, IL

HealthyHoliday_MattoonIL_2014_10Seven Generations Ahead is extremely thankful for the support of the Lumpkin Family Foundation, which allows us to expand our work and advance healthy communities throughout Illinois. SGA’s Fresh From the Farm program created five successful workshops with Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in 2014. The workshops were designed as holistic supports to the work of SBL’s health educators and focused on family wellness and eating fresh, seasonal vegetables. Working with strong partners in Coles County allows us to make the issue of sustainable food relevant and compelling in a rural, corn-belt community. One nurse who attended some of our programs said, “I found all of the information useful and definitely want to share some of the recipe modification tips and suggestions to help patients and clients try to improve personal and family nutritional habits. And I have certainly enjoyed trying some of the changes and incorporating new vegetables.”
